Our grade 5 measurement worksheets give students practice in converting between different measurement units for length, mass and volume within and between the customary and metric systems. Selection of measurement units and concepts related to precision and errors are also reviewed.
These math word problems worksheets involve the measurement of length in both customary (inches, feet, yards) and metric (millimeters, centimeters, meters) units. No conversions of units between the two systems are needed.

In the metric system, there is the same root word in units and only the prefix changes (for example: millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, etc.). So, it becomes easier to learn. In the US customary system, units do not have the same root word. (for example: inch, foot, yard). The customary units are a bit complex because you must know the conversion rates.
There is a slight difference between the imperial and customary systems.. Units like cubic inches, cubic feet, etc., are the same in both systems, but units such as bushels, gallons, etc., are different in each.

Conversions between measuring units are studied all through elementary school, starting with very easy problems in grades 3-4 and advancing to converting measurements that use decimals in grades 5-7.

Measurement concepts and skills give students the ability to perform tasks related to everyday life. Length, area, volume, capacity, mass, time and temperature are measurement concepts that people are exposed to everyday. Students begin using non-standard units such as their own height and progress to using standard measurement units. Being able to recognize and use for comparison, common measurement units such as the metre or foot, allows students to use their estimation skills to help them solve problems in measurement. Measurement tools enable students to learn hands-on and develop a deeper understanding of measurement concepts.
Converting between Metric and U.S. customary units can be accomplished in a number of ways and usually takes a little knowledge of fractions and/or decimals. Most commonly, students will use a formula to convert and round the values. You may like our converting inches and centimeters with rulers worksheets for students who have difficulty with manipulating the numbers and formulas and need an easier method.
Metric to customary conversion worksheets can require the application of several conversion factors to find the answers. Unless a conversion is simple, such as centimeters to inches, where the conversion involves multiplying or dividing by a simple constant factor, the process may require multiple conversions to intermediate units. For example, converting centimeters to feet might require dividing the number of centimeters by 2.54 to get a number of inches, and then dividing by twelve to get the number of feet (the quotient) and inches (the remainder). The conversion worksheets in this section focus on multi-stage conversions, and the answer keys provide detailed steps as each conversion factor is applied to get the final answer.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
It is instructive that on the bill of lading under the column entitled "MEASUREMENT CUBIC FEET," the only information is "LENGTH 42'." In the section "FREIGHT AND CHARGES," no freight assessment is made in the areas allotted rates per cubic foot and per pound. Instead the length of the cruiser is inserted as is a lump sum charge of $2,460.00[*]. See, Id., see also Aluminios, supra, 407 F.2d at 156. Thus, the bill of lading itself indicates that a per vehicle rate not a unit of poundage or cubic feet was used to calculate the freight charge. This conclusion is buttressed by an affidavit in support of defendant's motion which affidavit indicates that the freight rates used by defendant in the carriage of yachts from Hong Kong to Great Lakes ports in 1969 were the same as the contract rates established by the Hong Kong/East Canada Freight Conference. For yachts, sailing boats and pleasure crafts between forty-one and forty-two feet in length and under 35,000 pounds, the contract rate provided was $2,460.00. In short, the customary freight unit for a cruiser of the size shipped in this cause was the cruiser itself. See Pannell v.
